City trader spends big with £40,000 bar bill

A commodities dealer splashed out while trying to impress Benicio Del Toro on a big night out for nine friends at Raffles bar in London.

The dealer started his night with a round of zombie cocktails of rum, absinthe and grapefruit at £30 each.

But the night is reported to have really gone crazy when Hollywood actor Del Toro turned up at the table next to the mystery trader.

Soon three Methuselahs of Dom Pérignon were ordered, with the three, six litre, bottles coming to £24,000.

These were followed by two magnums of Dom Pérignon 2000 Rosé, costing £1,100 each and six bottles of Krug Rosé, totalling £2,400.

The 10 friends obviously had a taste for Champagne as the trader also spent £3,500 on seven bottles of Dom Pérignon Oenothéque 1996.

But it wasn’t just Champagne on the menu as two Jeroboams of Belvedere vodka were bought for £1,640 plus seven Don Julio 1942 Tequilas. The friends also added one bottle of rum, 16 Patrón Café and 25 cans of Red Bull.

The bar bill came to £34,861.50, with the staff delighted to see that a £5,229.23 service charge was added to the bill, bringing the total cost to £40,090.73.

A Raffles spokesman said: “This is one of our higher spends. They don’t happen often but when they do, it’s great.”
