US confirms 198th AVA

The US Treasury Department has approved American Viticultural Area (AVA) status for the Middleburg Virginia region.

Located 50 miles west of Washington DC, the 190-square mile AVA surrounds the town of Middleburg and is bordered by the Potomac River to the north, with mountains to its east, south and west.

Middleburg Virginia AVA currently contains 229 acres of commercial vineyards, including 14 wineries and 10 vineyards.

The current list of wineries is as follows: Barrel Oak Winery, Boxwood Estate Winery, Chateau O’Brien at Northpoint, Doukenie Winery, Piedmont Vineyards and Winery, Swedenburg Estate Winery, Village Winery, Corcoran Vineyards, Hiddencroft Vineyards, Louduon Valley Vineyards, Naked Mountain Vineyard, Sunset Hills Vineyard, Three Fox Vineyards, Vintage Ridge Vineyard.

The vineyards currently included within the AVA are: 2 Sisters Vineyard, Calucci Vineyard, Delaplane Vineyard, North Gate Vineyard, Seven Oaks Vineyard, Short Hill Vineyard, Spring Lot Vineyard, Sycamore Springs Vineyard, Vinecroft Vineyard.

Wineries are permitted to identify themselves as being within the AVA area if at least 85% of the fruit for their wines is grown within the AVA.

The approval makes Middleburg the seventh AVA in Virginia and the 198th in the US.
