Pichons lead this morning’s Bordeaux releases

Pichon Baron, Pichon Comtesse and Léoville Barton began this week’s en primeur releases.

Super second: Chateau Pichon Baron

The Pichons both released close to 50% down on their 2010 prices at €72 p/b, while Léoville Barton came out at €45 p/b.

The release prices place the châteaux’s 2011 wines above current 2008 trading prices to varying degrees, but below prices of 2001.

How the market will react to these prices remains to be seen but all of the wines have good Robert Parker scores – Léoville Barton and Pichon Baron 90-92+ each and Pichon Comtesse 92-94.

It has often been noted that wines in 2011 need to be the cheapest on the market in order to sell but this has been disproved in cases such as Pontet Canet and Margaux.

So far today 12 wines have released and there will be hopes that last week’s “Super Tuesday” glut of 40 wines is not repeated.

Clos Fourtet at €48 p/b, Rauzan-Ségla at €81 and Grand Puy Lacoste at €54 are also among today’s releases.

Grand Puy Lacoste was voted as potentially the best value wine of the vintage in Liv-ex’s merchant survey before the campaign truly began but at around £420 a case it is more expensive than its 2008 (£270) and 2001 (£375).
