Enotria in Spain push

UK wine importer and distributor Enotria is to give Spanish wine a big push having expanded its portfolio with a number of new lines from across the country.

“We’re known for being an Italian specialist, which is no bad thing, but we’re keen to spread our wings and explore new areas, and nearby Spain seemed a natural choice,” Enotria’s communications manager Ben Smith told the drinks business.

It’s such a vibrant and exciting wine country it made sense to branch out there – the wines from Ribeiro, Alicante and Somontano have really blown us away,” Smith added.

Enotria’s thirst for Ribeiro tallies with the UK trend db reported last month for cool climate whites from northwest Spain, as buyers seek out Godello, Loureiro and old vine Treixadura in repsonse to the surge popularity of Albariño from Rías Baixas.

The company’s new Spanish range focuses on many of the country’s emerging regions, including Cigales, Cariñena, and Montsant, and their corresponding indigenous grape varieties, such as Juan García from Arribes, Monastrell from Jumilla and Macabeo from Calatayud.

Keen to capitalise on Spain’s value offering, Enotria has also added a number of entry level lines from Rioja and Navarra to its portfolio.

“With more old vines than any other country in the world, Spain offers tradition, innovation, emerging regions and amazing variety. I’m really proud of our new line-up,” Enotria’s Spanish buyer Harriet Kininmonth told db.

“With a flurry of new wave winemakers bursting onto the scene, never before has Spanish wine been at the centre of such a quality revolution,” Kininmonth added
