English sparkler added to Sainsbury’s range
Denbies Wine Estate has produced a sparkling wine for Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference range.
The 2007 vintage wine is a “classic Champagne blend” of all three of that region’s key grapes and made in the Champagne method.
Lucy Clements, Sainsbury’s resident winemaker, commented: “We are delighted to be working with Denbies Wine Estate. They are technically advanced, experienced winemakers who really ‘get’ what we look to offer our customers.
“We’ve worked together to create a wine that we think our customers will love.”
“The growth of the English wine industry has been hugely supported by major retailers like Sainsbury’s,” commented Christopher White, general manager of Denbies Wine Estate.
“It is a great coup for Denbies to be selected by Sainsbury’s as part of their premium range, who have also secured two further vintages to meet demand.”
It is the first English sparkling wine in one of the major multiples own brand range. Tesco Finest has an English still white wine priced at £8, while Waitrose has the biggest selection of any English wine in the supermarkets.
The 2007 Sparkling Brut will be priced at £19.99 and is part of what Denbies hopes will be a long-term inclusion in the range “of at least two vintages” according to marketing manager Jeannette Simpson.
