Pole position

Vodka dominates the Polish drinks market to the extent that all other spirits can be classified as "also rans"

THE TOTAL spirits market in Poland stands at around 27 million cases which places it in 15th place in the world ranking of spirits countries.  The market is completely dominated by vodka, which accounts for over 94% of the total spirits market.

The only other significant sectors are brandy, liqueurs, gin and whisk(e)y, which account for just 5% of the market between them.  The overall market is recovering from a low point in 2001, driven by price reductions across all sectors, and should receive a boost with the abolition of import duties.

Vodka, in particular, has recovered from what appeared to be an inevitable long-term decline, while brandy, liqueurs, gin and rum have continued to lose volume. However, whisk(e)y has seen growth of almost 9% per year.

Flavoured alcoholic beverages have made some impact, although volumes are still relatively low.
