Longer shelf life from new PET packaging
A new PET bottle has been developed which boasts an enhanced shelf life for wine. Called the Multi-Layer PET (MLP), the innovative packaging format consists of two layers of PET with a nylon layer in between, which acts as a barrier to carbon dioxide and oxygen.

cutaway_193x400.jpg Created by Roger Harris Wines and Paul Sapin SA, the bottle is exclusive to the latter company and will be officially unveiled at the London Wine Fair in 25cl and 18.7cl sizes. Both businesses have specialised in small bottles since 1997 and Paul Sapin has a modern facility near Mâcon in France where it produces over 12 million PET bottles each year.

Clare Montgomery, sales director at Roger Harris Wines commented on the new format:
“While many involved in the wine trade have shown interest in PET bottles because of their lighter weight and strength, there is concern regarding the shorter shelf life. The MLP is specifically designed to overcome this issue, allowing us to produce a superb quality wine in a longer lasting, unbreakable, attractive bottle.”

She added, “It will have particular use in many sectors of the wine trade where the ultimate consumer enjoying a glass of wine will enjoy the advantages of the lightweight, unbreakable bottle… while the retailer will enjoy the logistical and environmental benefits of the increased shelf life.”

Roger Harris Wines is a Norfolk-based, family-run business that has been supplying the UK wine trade for over 30 years.
