US wines added to Downton Abbey range

Two Californian wines have been added to the Downton Abbey range inspired by the character of Lady Cora Crawley, the American wife of the Earl of Grantham.

The Countess of Grantham Collection includes a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay made with grapes sourced from Lodi in California’s Central Valley.

The “bold”, “fruit forward” pair complement the original two wines in the Downton range: a Merlot dominant red blend and a Muscadelle-based white blend from Bordeaux.

The California Cabernet is said to offer aromas of “ripe cherry, vanilla and spice”, while the Chardonnay boasts “tropical fruit and citrus notes”.

“We’re thrilled to broaden our Downton Abbey portfolio to include these popular varieties crafted with exceptional California fruit,” said William Zysblat, co-founder of Downton Abbey Wines.

“As legions of Downton fans enjoy the show with a glass in hand, they now have even more choices with a new Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.”

The new collection has gone on sale in the US, with both wines priced at US$14.99 a bottle.

The Downton Abbey Wines brand is handled in the US by California-based LCF Wines, a joint venture between the LangeTwins, Coors and Ficeli families. The fifth season of the award-winning TV series aired in the UK last autumn.
