Waitrose
For its overall performance, innovation, and responsible approach to alcohol retailing, Waitrose was chosen by judges as Retailer of the Year.
Of particular note was the introduction of the “In Partnership” range – an innovative concept executed together with producers from around the world. These wines benefit from bearing the names of these brands, as well as the endorsement of being a Waitrose wine.
This was not the only addition to the retailer’s range in the last year. A new collection of English wines was launched, supplied to branches within 30 miles of the wineries. This has significantly driven sales of English wines within Waitrose. A number of beers and ciders were added to the primarily locally sourced list.
All of these developments helped Waitrose to achieve significant growth for beer, wine and spirits, with some sub-categories showing impressive increases, such as organic wine up 11%, and English wine up 91%.
This retailer’s high standards and a focus on premium price points caused it to stand out for judges. As one judge commented, “They’re all-round impressive – and don’t rely as much on price-promotion.”
