NZ Winegrowers welcomes Asian sommeliers to 2018 ‘Sommit’

10th August, 2017 by Natalie Wang

New Zealand Winegrowers has launched the 2018 New Zealand Wine Sommelier Scholarship, welcoming sommeliers from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan and Singapore to a series of ‘Sommits’.

Stephen Wong MW, one of the local hosts for the two ‘Sommits’

First launched in association with Sommeliers Australia in 2015, the scholarship is now a global initiative with sommeliers from Asia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, the US and Europe set to compete for the prize in 2018.

The scholarship will include attendance at one of the two Sommits to be held in Nelson and Central Otago, and a combination of wine-related activities and tastings in other selected regions, providing not only winemaker interaction, but invaluable networking opportunities with international peers, according to the trade association.

Limited to just 20 attendees at each of the two Sommits, the events will be attended exclusively by sommeliers and organised exclusively to their interests.

Hosted by Master Sommelier Cameron Douglas and Master of Wine Stephen Wong, the events are, “a celebration of the lesser known aspects of New Zealand wine, with particular emphasis on the facets that resonate with the sommelier community”, said the trade organisation.

“It has been a privilege to welcome such a talented and passionate group of wine professionals to New Zealand on the scholarship programme over the past two years, exploring the depth and breadth of New Zealand’s many wine regions,” said New Zealand Winegrowers’ global marketing director, Chris Yorke.

“The scholars have become true ambassadors for New Zealand wine, sharing personal wine discoveries and insights from their trips with international customers and the wider sommelier community – something we simply can’t replicate in a classroom.”

Candidates are expected to have a strong passion for the wine industry, and be able to demonstrate a thirst for knowledge of New Zealand wine.
