Protein beer for gym-loving drinkers launched

Body-building beer fans can now get a six-pack while they enjoy a six-pack with the launch of a high-protein, low-calorie brew.

Gym-bunnies who would rather sip a beer than guzzle a tepid protein shake after their workout can now do just that – without undoing their hard work.

Each bottle of Barbell Brew – created by health retailer Muscle Food – contains 21.8g of protein and has an alcoholic volume of 3.6%.

It means the beer has the same alcohol content as a normal lager, while at the same time packing as much protein as a sirloin steak.

The phrase ‘beer belly’ doesn’t apply to this brew, as the beer is also low in calories, with only 92.4 per bottle.

Darren Beale from Muscle Food said: “Living a healthy lifestyle can be difficult, especially when you enjoy a drink with friends. But now our high-protein alternative means anyone can enjoy a beer without the guilt.

“It’s also ideal as a post-workout protein source. It packs a whopping 21.8g of protein per bottle and is also a refreshing and delicious drink.

“Our rigorous taste tests have ensured it tastes similar to popular craft beers whilst holding 85% fewer carbohydrates and 33% less calories than other well-known brews.

“The palate has been described as assertive with a unique sweetness and notes of tropical fruits, meaning it has something to suit everyone.

“Many of our customers are looking forward to enjoying a cold beer along with one of our hugely popular high-protein pizzas.

“Never before has anyone been able to claim that drinking a six-pack will help you get a six-pack and we’re delighted to have finally achieved just that.”

The price of the beer has yet to be confirmed.

UPDATE: 5/04/2016
Muscle Food has now reported that the beer is not gluten free, despite previously claiming that it is. The article has been edited to reflect this.
