Klein Constantia to host Cape Wine Auction

The 2016 AfrAsia Bank Cape Wine Auction will be held at Klein Constantia, which has just had its Cape Dutch manor house restored.

The auction will be held from 12-13 February at the estate and will feature lots from some of South Africa’s finest estates including: Hamilton Russell Vineyards, Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons, Paul Cluver, Boucgard Finlayson, Meerlust, Groot Constantia and Kanonkop.

“It is an honour to host the AfrAsia Bank Cape Wine Auction at Klein Constantia, and at the same time is historically significant for the event to be held in this region given that Constantia was the first South African wine region, dating back to 1685, and Klein Constantia one of the first wine estates,” remarked Hans Astrom, managing director of Klein Constantia.

Only in its third year, the Cape Wine Auction aims to raise money to support education in the Cape’s Winelands and has raised ZAR17 million (US$1m) in its first two incarnations, ZAR10m alone at last year’s auction which was an African philanthropic record.

A total of 13 charities have benefited from the funds raised at the auctions including MAD Charity, The Pebbles Project, The Foundation and other organisations that provide underprivileged children with vocational training, psychosocial support, sport therapy and educational facilities.

Charles Harman, co-owner of Klein Constantia, added: “The AfrAsia Bank Cape Wine Auction is now firmly established as the definitive gathering of the most influential supporters of the Cape Wine Industry. We are delighted to welcome all this year’s participants to Klein Constantia and salute the great education charities being so generously supported”.
