Strong Asia sale concludes year for Acker

Acker Merrall & Condit’s Hong Kong auction has placed China as the strongest buyers’ market in Asia, as bidders snapped up nine of the top 10 lots.

Still got it: the Romanée-Conti vineyards claim Asian buyers’ hearts

A 21-bottle “superlot” of Romanée-Conti sold for HK$2.1 million/US$271,000 to a bidder present at the auction, beating its lowest estimate of HK$1.6m and was the most expensive Romanée-Conti lot sold by Acker Merrall in 2015, according to the New York auction house.

Saturday’s sale which took place in the Grand Hyatt’s Grissini restaurant, revealed that demand for premium Burgundy has been the “strongest” yet as seven of the top 10 lots sold hailed from Romanée-Conti, including a rare 12-magnum of the 1988 which sold for HK$543,400/US$70,116.

Other lots which beat their estimates were another 19-bottle superlot of 1955-1999 Salon Le Mesnil that went for HK$419,900/$54,180 and a rare six magnum lot of 1985 Dujac Clos St. Denis that fetched the same price. Nine of the top 10 were purchased by collectors from Greater China, which “reinforces the strength of the Asian market,” said John Kapon, Acker’s CEO.

“I am very proud that we are the number one firm in Hong Kong now eight years running,” he continued. “Our incredible friends and clients here in Asia are here to stay and reports of Greater China’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. The responses, attendance and welcomes we received in Shanghai, Shenzhen and Taipei were exciting, heartwarming and invigorating.”

“Of course, let’s not forget Hong Kong itself, which is still the heart of it all, and the USA and Tokyo had plenty to say this auction, as well.  There is more diversity both with the amount of wines coming to the auction block, and in our client base, and we will continue to march forward, increasing our footprint with each step.  The fine wine market in Asia starts with A, as in Acker.”

Acker’s final auction of 2015 will be held in New York on 16 December 6th, 2015 while its first Hong Kong sale is scheduled for 23 January.
