Man imprisoned for lacing wine with anti-freeze

A Hungarian man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for killing someone by lacing a barrel of cherry wine with anti-freeze.

The 39-year-old unidentified man was convicted of manslaughter and multiple counts of attempted manslaughter at a Budapest regional court on Wednesday.

The man, from a village to the east of Budapest, admitted to adding two litres of anti-freeze to a barrel of cherry wine in October 2013 after thieves stole from it.

One of the thieves died from kidney failure shortly after drinking the wine. The convict, who has appealed the ruling, told the court that he wanted to teach the thieves a lesson but never intended to kill anyone.
