Fergie’s wines go under hammer at Christie’s

The third and final part of the private collection of former Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, will be on offer at Christie’s next Hong Kong sale.

The bottles of Bordeaux, Burgundy and Tuscan wines donated by Sir Alex will be available as part of a two-day sale from 27-28 November and all will be proof-tagged with “Sir Alex Ferguson CBE Collection.” Additionally, each buyer will receive a signed copy of Sir Alex’s recent book, Leading.

The first part of Ferguson’s wine sell-off took place in Hong Kong back in May 2014 and made HK$29.3m (£2m), while the second happened in London in June of that year and realised over £500,000.

The auction will kick-off on 27 November with a single-owner collection including the “finest and rarest Burgundy wines” from Lalou Bize-Leroy’s world-famous Domaine Leroy, Maison Leroy and Domaine d’Auvenay. This collection will be highlighted by a lot formed by more than 12 bottles of assorted Domaine Leroy 1995 wines estimated at HK$110,000-140,000.

On 28 November, A major selection from a Hong Kong collector will go under the hammer, led by a case of 12 bottles of Romanée-Conti. This sale will also feature part II of Dr. Gordon Ku’s wine collection will be also be on offer which spans over 40 years and features a great selection of top vintages, including mature wines from classic regions, from Burgundy to the Rhône valley. A particular highlight is the 12-bottle case of 1998 Krug estimated at HK$17,000.

Simon Tam, head of Christie’s Asia Wine Department, commented: “This November, Christie’s Hong Kong will present four exceptional private collections featuring some of the world’s finest and rarest wines.

“Each of these discerning wine connoisseurs have carefully assembled their collections over many years and have kept their wines in remarkable conditions. Spanning the world’s most famous and renowned estates, our auctions are particularly exciting for the mix of top quality collectable wines and of more affordable, mature wines ready to be enjoyed.”
