Glenfiddich searches for Malt Mastermind

Scotch brand Glenfiddich has launched its Malt Mastermind competition, with bartenders invited to “demonstrate creativity, knowledge and showmanship” by creating a serve using Glenfiddich whisky.

The entry process, which can be seen on the Malt Mastermind website, will be open until 23 August.

Last year’s winner, Ali Reynolds from Hawksmoor Spitalfields, has been invited back to defend his title against nine other hopefuls.

Commenting on the launch of this year’s competition, brand ambassador Mark Thomson said, “This year we are looking for someone who not only has a passion for malt whisky and a real understanding of the complexity of the liquid, but also someone who can have a bit of fun with it. The delivery of a serve is key and the finalists will not only need to showcase a great drink but do so with great storytelling and presence behind the bar.

“The calibre of finalists we see every year is a credit to the UK on-trade industry. I am really excited to see what this year’s competition will bring and discover some new and interesting Glenfiddich drinks. The winner will have a great opportunity to work with us over the next year at brand events and showcase their serve.”

The competition will be held at the Glenfiddich Vaults at Voltaire in Central London on 14th September 2015. As well as serving up their signature drinks, the finalists will also take part in a quick fire buzzer round – testing knowledge on both “the serious and more light-hearted side” of all things whisky, according to the brand.

Competitors will be judged on creativity, execution and presentation skills, appearance, nose, taste and finish.

The winner will enjoy a VIP trip to the Glenfiddich distillery where they will try some rare expressions and have “access all areas”. In addition, they will take home a trophy and prize money amounting £1,000.
