Raffles celebrates Sing Sling’s centenary

Raffles Hotel in Singapore has announced a range of activities to pay tribute to the iconic Singapore Sling cocktail which turns 100 this year.

Created in the Long Bar at Raffles by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon in 1915, the “Sing Sling” is regarded as almost the national drink of Singapore and equally regarded as a classic cocktail recipe around the globe.

“The Singapore Sling is a world renowned cocktail and its enormous success has become synonymous with Raffles Singapore,” said Simon Hirst, general manager at Raffles Singapore.

“In recognition of its 100th birthday, we want to highlight its sweet success with special events to encourage everyone to discover, rediscover and enjoy the Singapore Sling.”

Raffles has announced a “host of activities” as part of its celebration, including commemorative merchandise and even new desserts inspired by the cocktail as part of a wider tasting menu.

Cocktail lovers can choose to stay at Raffles with the “Singapore Sling 100th Anniversary Package” which, from S$1,380, includes a private session on how to make the cocktail in the Long Bar itself.

For those just dropping in, Raffles will also be holding Singapore Sling Masterclasses and the bar is always open from  11am daily.

Opened in 1887, Raffles is one of Asia’s most famous hotels and contains 14 restaurants and bars including the Raffles Grill, Long Bar and the Writers Bar, which has played host to Somerset Maughan and Rudyard Kipling among others.
