Sotheby’s gearing up for ‘superlative’ sale

Over 1,400 lots of “superlative” Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and vintage Port are due to go under the hammer at Sotheby’s in London tomorrow.

The “finest and rarest wines” sale, which is expected to net £1.5m, includes all of the Domaine de la Romanée Conti Grand Cru reds from the 2005 in magnum.

Right Bank Bordeaux estate Petrus will also have a starring role in the auction, with a case of the 1982 vintage carrying an estimate of £34,000-40,000.

This will be sold alongside Petrus from 1989, 1990, 1998 and 2000, described by Sotheby’s head of wine, Serena Sutcliffe MW, as “a rarity in every way”.

Also up for grabs will be a “pristine” collection of Bordeaux super second Château Montrose spanning from 1975 to 2010, Lafite 1952, Cheval Blanc 2005 and Yquem from 1900.

Taking in wines from the New World, the auction includes lots from Australia, South America and California.

In time for Christmas, three magnums of 1990 Krug and 24 cases of Fonseca 1983 rested in the cellar of “a distinguished London club”, will also be sold.

The auction begins at 10am on Wednesday 10 October.
