Charles Heidsieck winemaker dies

8th October, 2014 by Rupert Millar

Thierry Roset, chef de caves of Champagne house Charles Heidsieck, has died suddenly at the age of 55.

Thierry-Rosset-copy-640x426As reported by local French newspaper, l’Union, Roset died suddenly over the weekend. Described by the paper as “discreet, charming and calm”, Roset had enjoyed a sterling career in Champagne having worked on the oenological teams at Moët & Chandon, Louis Roederer, Piper and Charles Heidsieck.

He only took over the reins as chef de caves at Charles Heidsieck in 2012 when Regis Camus, a man he had worked with since 2004, who became director of viticulture and wine for Piper and Charles Heidsieck.

David Gleave of Liberty Wines said: “Thierry combined a love of his region and its wines with great passion for Champagne and an outstanding palate. Like his wines, these elements were balanced by a touching humility. He will be very sorely missed, but will be remembered through his wines for many years to come.”

“Our thoughts are with Thierry‘s wife, their three children and wider family,” said Cecile Bonnefond, chief executive of Charles Heidsieck.

Roset featured in the drinks business’ “12 Winemakers to Watch” printed earlier this year.

  1. Tom Stevenson says:

Regis Camus did not leave Charles Heidsieck. He was and still is in overall charge of winemaking for both Charles Heidsieck and Piper-Heidsieck. Regis wanted to concentrate on continuing to build the quality at Piper and Thierry’s connection with Charles preceded that of Regis, so he was the natural choice to take over as chef de caves. What a sad loss …

  2. Rob Remnant says:

Tom’s absolutely right. Thierry took direction from Régis as Champagne Piper-Heidsieck’s & Champagne Charles Heidsieck’s Directeur, Vignes & Vins. The elaboration of both houses’ champagnes therefore remains in the most capable and caring of hands.
