Louis XIII auction line-up

Spink’s sale in Singapore next week will see a stellar line-up of rare Louis XIII Cognacs go under the hammer, representing nearly every decade back to the 1960s.

Rémy Martin’s Louis XIII has long been considered the pinnacle of luxury Cognac and a favourite of Kings and Queens, statesman and celebrities from Tsar Nicholas II to Picasso, Churchill and de Gaulle.

First created in 1874, the brand is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year and at the sale will unveil a brand new, limited edition, Louis XIII which one successful bidder will have the opportunity to own.

The selection of decanters dates back to the 1960s and will allow buyers to see (and even own) the progression of Louis XIII’s packaging, from the boxes of the ‘60s and ‘70s to the “treasure chests” and “shells” of the modern era, as well as the introduction of the famous fleur de lys stopper in the 1980s.

Click through to see each lot of Louis XIII that will be on offer at the sale. Lots 38-45 have been consigned by Spink clients and are lying in Spink’s cellars in Singapore.

Lots 46-47 have been consigned by Rémy Martin, from the house’s cellars and are currently in Singapore duty paid.

Lot 48 is a yet to be released limited edition decanter, the buyer will be placed on a waiting list and receive the bottle upon release later in the year.

The sale is taking place on Friday 19 September at the Hilton Singapore from 7pm. For more information, click here.

Lot 46: Louis XIII Rare Cask 42.6 (2013 limited edition)

In a black crystal Baccarat decanter with a 22 carat rose gold neck ring, this is number 8 of only 738 decanters released in 2013.

In a step up from the cream and red boxes and treasure chests of the 60s-80s, the rare cask is presented in a forged metal “strong box”.

S$37,000 (HK$227,000)

Lot 47: Le Jeroboam

Since 2011, Louis XIII has released a limited number of three litre decanters, which was designed for luxury hotels and collectors.

The crystal decanters hold four times more liquid than the usual 70cl format and only 100 are released every year, so only 400 have been produced so far.

This is decanter number 17 from its release and comes in a padded wooden trunk, along with a pipette like those used by cellar master’s to draw liquid from the cask as well as four crystal glasses.

S$31,000 (HK$190,200)

Lot 48: Black Pearl 150th Anniversary Edition

The sale will see the special unveiling of a new, as yet unreleased, limited edition Louis XIII.

Consisting of just 775 decanters, filled with spirit from a 572 litre cask which is part of the Rémy Martin family’s private collection, the Black Pearl is to be released to celebrate the 140th anniversary of Louis XIII.

The cask from which the Cognac is drawn is over 100 years old and the base spirit of the final Cognac dates back that far as a result.

To reflect the original metal flask that the very first Louis XIII was presented in in 1874, the crystal decanter has been overlaid with thin coatings of titanium, carbon and gold.

As the decanters have not yet been officially released, the buyer of this decanter will be placed on a waiting list and will receive it when the other bottles reach the market which is expected to be some time in December of this year.

In addition, the buyer will be invited to spend a night in Cognac and visit The Grollet, the Rémy Martin family’s home in St-Même-les-Carrières.

S$16,500 (HK$101,225)
