Porto Cruz opens six million litre winery

La Martiniquaise, the owner of Porto Cruz, has opened a new state-of-the art new winery and a bulk storage facility close to Portugal’s Douro Valley.

Located in northwest Portugal in Alijo, the new facility includes a winery with an annual capacity of six million litres and a centralised bulk storage facility capable of holding 20 million litres.

Surrounded by the vineyards of the famous Douro valley, where the grapes that go into making Port wines are grown, the project’s completion marks a significant investment in the Port industry.

In a statement announcing its grand opening Sylvia Bernard, group international marketing director for La Martiniquaise, said: “This investment in Douro, will cement our commitment to develop the sales of Port and to expand the positions of Porto Cruz worldwide.”

The site, which belongs to the Gran Cruz house, was officially opened by Mr Cavaco Silva, President of the Republic of Portugal, the Secretaries of State for the Economy and Agriculture and the French Consul, after a guided tour of the winery in June.

The event was broadcast on Portuguese television with Silva welcoming La Martiniquaise’s investment in promoting and developing the export of Port wines.

La Martiniquaise, the second-largest spirits group in France, was founded in 1934 by Jean Cayard and includes brands such as LABEL 5 Scotch Whisky, Poliakov Vodka and Porto CRUZ.

Gran Cruz, which produces Porto Cruz Port wine, is based in Portugal’s Vila Nova de Gaia producing 25 million bottles a year, making it one of the region’s biggest producers.
