Chocolate lobster beer makes comeback

A US brewery has relaunched what could be one of the world’s most unusual beers to date – a chocolate lobster ale.

Brewed with five lobsters, the Dogfish Brewery’s 5.6% Choc Lobster is said to have notes of “bittersweet chocolate” with “subtle herb and ocean notes”.

It was first brewed by the Delaware brewery in 2012 as part of a small batch program to introduce “weird one-off batches” for its in house diners, originally paired with a chocolate lobster bisque and white chocolate lobster salad slider.

Now Dogfish has upped its production scaling up the brew and releasing it as a limited edition draft.

Speaking of their creation the brewery said: “This scaled-up batch has a robust porter base and was brewed with live lobsters, which were added directly to the boil to cook off for the kitchen.

“Along with the lobsters, just over six pounds of dark cocoa powder were added to the whirlpool, along with a basil tea that was added to compliment both the chocolate and lobster.

“The result is a rich dark ale with notes of bittersweet chocolate and roast, with a slight herbal nuance and a subdued taste of the ocean in the finish.”

The beer is only available on tap at the brewery’s Rehoboth Beach brewpub in Delaware.
