The first of this year’s most popular fun stories and the kind of headline that normally a journalist can only dream of. Swino became something of an Australian piggy celebrity. After his drunken outburst Swino sadly died early, but there is talk that the pig could have a plaque dedicated to him.

Despite having already created a 65% beer called “Armageddon”, Scottish brewery Brewmeister upped the strong beer ante once again. The brewer responded to that Armageddon didn’t taste strong enough, by brewing “Snake Venom” a 67% beer.

As we move into the top three stories for 2013, beer once again proves its popularity among db readers. Back in April the British Beer & Pub Association announced that the year had got off to a terrible start for many pubs, as UK beer sales fell by almost 50 million pints. Fortunately a hot summer has helped to provide the industry with a beer consuming boost.

Snake preserved in wine bites woman

And this year’s most popular story was written by Lucy Shaw, who tracked down this incredible story of a woman in northern China who had to receive hospital treatment after a snake preserved in rice wine jumped out of the bottle and bit her hand.
