App translates beer order into 59 languages

A new app has been created that translates orders for beer into 59 different languages.

The “Pivo” app also provides directions on the correct pronunciation for the phrase, “one beer please”, be it in Welsh, Spanish or Zulu.

It was created by Justin Amey and Ollie Hepworth who, on a visit to the Czech Republic, realised they didn’t know the Czech for beer – “Pivo” it transpired hence the name of the app.

Amey told the Daily Mail: “Of course, you can just go to a bar and point to a beer but it is nice to make an effort to speak the language when you’re in a foreign country.”

What started as a “bit of fun” is now one of the most downloaded apps in the travel section of the App Store.

Ordering beer is said to be one of the most commonly learnt phrases for tourists after staples such as “please” and “thank you”.

The app includes the major European languages as well as more obscure ones such as Gaelic, Basque, Breton and Welsh.

Hindi, Indonesian and Japanese are also included, as are the second language of the Philippines (Tagalog), a Ghanain dialect (Twi), Icelandic, Malay, Afrikaans, Thai and Yiddish.

Some of the more interesting but less useful languages are Occitan, Latin and Sardinian.
