Over the course of 2012 the db top 10s have proved very popular and we’ve gathered together the best from naughty adverts to hangover cures.

We recently revealed our most popular stories of 2012, and that revealed db readers to be fans of the unfortunate and the extravagant.

But would the same rules apply to our top 10s?

We’ve covered a huge range of topics in out top 10s over the last 12 months, from red trousers to the royal family and from naughty adverts to rude labels. But what has been the most popular?

For the fun purposes of this list we’ve taken out our more serious features of the top Champagne brands, wine brands and beer brands. We’ve also not included the 50 most powerful women in wine.

9. Top 10 red trousers in the wine trade

Trends in wine usually means looking at the rise of various grapes, regions or even countries.

Some of db‘s eagle-eyed editorial team noticed there was another trend developing, one for red trousers and we celebrated the renaissance in 2012.

8. The royal family’s favourite drinks

It is a bumper time for the royal family. After starting a royal wave with the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton last year, the family carried on riding high with diamond jubilee celebrations and have capped it off with the announcement of a royal pregnancy.

Admittedly this top 10 was put together before the Duchess of Cambridge’s pregnancy was announced so she won’t be enjoying her favourite cocktail for a while now.

Sometimes a top 10 just presents itself to you and when a six foot, half ton robot wine rack was announced, we just knew we had to unveil the top 10 weird and wacky drinks gadgets.

Tattoos have become increasingly fashionable over the last couple of years and it’s now hard to spot a pop singer or footballer who is not sporting some kind of skin ink.

Why should the drinks industry miss out? Well, as this top 10 revealed it isn’t.

This top 10 came about after we reported that a new wine called If You See Kay was causing controversy in the US. The story proved really popular so we thought “why not compile a list of the rudest and most controversial wine labels and names?”

4. Top 10 hangover cures

Who doesn’t love finding out a good hangover cure? After a chat in the db office we realised there were a good number of crazy cures around and then thanks to Twitter we were able to pull some really interesting thoughts.

3. Top 10 totally pointless wine accessories

In many ways wine is like golf, both have numerous gadgets that claim to help you enjoy it more.

We trawled the web to find some of wine industry’s more creative gadgets, among the objects we found, notably silly examples included stemware designed to make you feel drunk, as well as a beer jug that doubles as a wine glass, and a Paris goblet that fills itself.

2. Despots and their favourite drinks

The second most popular top 10 for db this year was a look at the drinks that despots have enjoyed throughout history. In many ways researching this piece actually proved a bit disappointing.

It’s not that there is anything particularly wrong with the drink but we all thought that if any of us became a tyrannical dictator we would be unlikely to go crazy for Mateus Rosé.

Who would have thought that something a bit naughty and risqué would prove popular on the internet? What is the world coming to?

This top 10 proved to be our most popular top 10 of 2012. We counted down the naughtiest advertisements ever created by booze brands to prove that sex really does sell.
