DRC ‘world’s most important wine producer’
Acker Merrall & Condit’s CEO, John Kapon, has called Domaine de la Romanée-Conti “the world’s most important producer” following a record-breaking sale in Hong Kong.
Acker’s sale on the 9-10 November raised a total of HK$46.8 million (US$6m), with DRC dominating proceedings and accounting for nine of the 10 top lots, and 30 of the top 36 lots.
The two most expensive sales were a case a 1988 Romanée-Conti for HK$1,033,200 (US$132,462) and three bottles of 2005 Romanée-Conti, which went for HK$541,200 (US$69,385).
Kapon said afterwards: “Domaine de la Romanée-Conti asserted itself this sale as the world’s most important producer, and the wine after which the producer is named set an amazing six new world records for six different vintages from the last decade.
“There was strong demand in Burgundy overall, and we also saw considerable interest in the wines from the Rhône, Germany and Italy.
“The market continues to diversify, and the next two months will bring direct consignments and appearances in Hong Kong from Gaja, Dujac and Roulot, along with two blockbuster auctions, the likes of which we haven’t seen since 2011. We’re excited to close out the Chinese calendar year in grand fashion!”
Other top lots included a case of 1982 Pétrus (HK$442,800/US$56,769) and a double magnum of 1993 Screaming Eagle for HK$118,080 (US$15,138), the same as another double magnum of 1994 Screaming Eagle.
