Top 10 wines in the UK press

From old favourites to midweek wines, we bring you the weekend’s top 10 wines mentioned in the UK press.

In the Observer, David Williams reminds us that old favourites can be looked at differently.

For many, Crozes Hermitage reds are an enjoyable drop, but Williams mentions a “fabulously good” Crozes Hermitage Blanc.

Olly Smith in the Mail on Sunday offers up a Saint Mont 2010, as a good value white wine for people who are looking for something a little bit different.

Meanwhile, in the Independent Terry Kirby recommends a white wine which is a perfect wine with your midweek meal.

Kirby also makes a suggestion on a wine that should improve in the bottle, so buying it now while it is on offer, is the perfect preparation for Christmas.

Domaine Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage Blanc (Yapp Bros, £19.25)

David Williams in The Observer encourages us to take a different look at some old favourites. “The red has long been one of my favourite, and best-value, Rhône reds”. Williams adds that this wine is “fabulously good: a classic blend of Marsanne and Roussanne.”

Tesco Finest Saint Mont 2010 (Tesco, £6.99)

Olly Smith in the Mail on Sunday offers up a white wine for people looking for something a bit different: “A decent alternative to Sauvignon Blanc, this zippy white has a lemony lift and is one to serve guests for something a little off the beaten track.”

Luis Felipe Edwards Signature Series Pinot Noir Reserva 2011 (£5.99 at Majestic)

Fiona Beckett in The Guardian is not happy about some “misleading special offers” that are available. She recommends the Luis Felipe Edwards Signature Series Pinot Noir Reserva 2011 (£5.99 at Majestic if you buy two or more). “A lush, raspberry-scented pinot that would be great with seared salmon, duck or caramelised roast veg. (Chill it first, though, because it’s quite sweet.)”

Domaine les Yeuses Vermentino (£6.95, Lea &Sandeman)

Fiona Beckett also recommends a white wine for your evening; Domaine les Yeuses Vermentino, a crisp, fresh, unconfected Languedoc white. “Perfect get-home-from-work drinking.”

Taste the Difference Côtes de Provence Rosé 2011 (Sainsbury’s, £7.99)

Although the summer is fading fast Susie Atkins in the Sunday Telegraph does not want us to forget about rosé.  “Attractive French rosé, a pretty pink with a subtle peachy glow. Delicate strawberry-and-cream flavour, there is a refreshing crisp zip – a mouthwatering aperitif.”

Doña Dominga El Rebaño Shiraz 2010 (Waitrose, £7.49)

But if you prefer a red wine in colder weather Susie Atkins also has something for you: “A new red from the Casa Silva stable. Inky purple in colour with spiced blackberries and damsons on the palate. Pair with peppery sausages and autumnal lamb braises.”

Cepa Lebrel Rioja Reserva 2008 (Lidl, £5.99)

In the Daily Telegraph Victoria Moore suggests Riojas at opposite ends of the budgetary scale. For those looking at the cheaper end Moore goes for the Cepa Lebrel Rioja Reserva 2008 Spain (Lidl, £5.99). She says the “wine is the pick of Lidl’s current range” and is “startling value for money”.

Contino Vina del Olivo 2007 (The Wine Society, £47.50)

If you are not sticking to a budget in your search for Rioja then Victoria Moore recommends Contino Vina del Olivo 2007 (The Wine Society, £47.50; Berry Brothers, £58). Moore says this is a modern Rioja classic and is the estate’s “glorious top wine” and that the “2007 is better than 2008 — so now is the moment for a treat”.

Château Clément Termes Gaillac Blanc Perlé 2011 (Marks & Spencer, £8.99)

In the Independent Terry Kirby recommends this as a wine to drink with your midweek meal. Kirby says this is a wine “for when something relatively light and undemanding is required”.

Old Vines Garnacha 2011, (Tesco, £5)

Terry Kirby also recommends the Old Vines Garnacha 2011, (Tesco, £5 – normally £8.99), which he says is currently on offer at Tesco adding that it “should get better in the bottle if you buy some to put aside for Christmas at this encouraging discount”.
