UK politician pushing for a ban on liquid nitrogen cocktails

A Conservative MP is stepping up demands for a ban on the use of liquid nitrogen in cocktail making.

The call comes after a teenager from Lancaster needed a life-saving operation to remove her stomach.

David Morris MP said: “I am very angry that one of my constituents has been injured by liquid nitrogen and as far as I am concerned that is one constituent too many.”

Gaby Scanlan, 18, was taken to hospital after feeling breathless and developing severe stomach pain after drinking a cocktail during a night out with friends in Lancaster city centre.

Doctors who operated on Scanlan said they believe that the youngster would have died if she had not had the emergency operation.

Morris, the MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale, has written to Prime Minister David Cameron and will table a motion demanding action from the Department of Health.

Morris added: “I will be assessing the options to make Parliament aware of what has happened to Gaby and I will ask MPs to consider banning liquid nitrogen drinks before someone else is injured or even killed.”

It is thought Morris will raise the issue during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday and is pushing for a full debate on the issue.
