London brewery toasts Games with century-old beer

After six months of research, the Camden Town Brewery has bottled its own 1908 Pale Ale in time for today’s Olympic opening ceremony.

The brewery discovered the 104-year-old recipe in its archives and was determined to make it in time for the kick-off of London 2012.

The ale, which is believed was named Elephant Ale at the time, in honour of the Elephant’s Head pub that still stands in Camden Lock, was nearly lost forever.

The former Camden Brewery changed hands over the toss of a coin in the 1920s and was swallowed up by the Courage Brewery – a large chain of pubs across London.

The beer, however, cannot be called “Olympic Pale Ale” due to copyright issues with the international sporting body, instead opting to call it “Camden 1908” Pale Ale.

It is available at the Brewery Bar from Friday 27 July until it runs out (some is also available for pubs). For the launch, the brewery is also having a few one-off casks of the beer available, each will be dry-hopped differently.
