Pichon-Baron gets QR code

23rd November, 2011 by Patrick Schmitt

Château Pichon Longueville Baron has become the first grand cru classé to adopt quick response codes.

The barcode, which allows smartphone users to quickly connect to the internet, features the château’s crest and will appear on all back labels of the 2009 vintage.

The addition of the code to bottles of Château Pichon-Baron marks one of the very few changes to the wine’s packaging since its inception.

While the front label has altered little over the years, the bottle gained a back label in 2005 to carry legal information such as the logo to warn against drinking when pregnant.

TxTImpact has Mobile QR codes or 2D code are codes in the same way as ordinary barcodes are, but their matrix structure can hold more information. The codes are also mobile in the sense that you can use the camera on your mobile device to scan and decode them. You can convert a web address (URL), a phone number, an email address or plain text into a mobile code. After scanning it with your camera phone, you will have instant access to the encoded information straight on the display of your mobile device.

The Portuguese winery Cortes de Cima (cortesdecima.pt) has been using the QR Codes on the backlabel since 2008, connecting the wine to a wine related social network (adegga.com) where you can comment about the wines and read about other people opinions and of course get full information about the wine.
