Champagne houses enraged by Christmas deals

Some of the major Champagne houses have been angered by heavy discounting by multiple retailers over the Christmas period and are threatening retaliation to prevent a reoccurrence. They are particularly annoyed that supermarkets used Champagne to promote their own brand images through deep price cutting at a time when demand is traditionally at its strongest.

Heineken moves into Belarus

The season of goodwill has not been entirely devoid of business deals with Heineken announcing its acquisition of Syabar Brewing. The Belarus brewer owns Bobrov, the second largest beer brand in Belarus as well as the “premium” Syabar.

Biofuels impact on beer production

The environmental debate looks set to hit brewers, as increasing numbers of farmers are planting lucrative biofuels. Hop production in some parts of the US have halved in the last year, which has put particular pressure on small batch, boutique brewers.

Wine looks to Indian summer

Latest figures published by the Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ACCII) indicate the market’s growing tendency towards wine – even away from the major urban centres. By March ACCII expects total consumption to exceed Rs14 billion (£178m).

Banrock Station has launched a Tetra Pak version of its Shiraz and Chardonnay. Called The Ecomate, it is described as “a greener packaging option for environmentally-conscious wine-lovers”.

Government commits £10m to “Know your limits” 2008

The UK government has more than doubled its spend on this year’s “Know your limits” anti-excessive drinking campaign. The new initiative will begin in April and has three key aims. The plan is to tackle firstly binge drinking, secondly underage drinking and thirdly to raise awareness of alcohol units.
