Pre-Christmas discounting “deeper than ever before”

"Surviving" is a nine-letter word, and appropriately it looks set to become the main ambition of individuals, families and businesses in 2009. Everywhere the gloom is deepening. Unemployment is accelerating rapidly and could hit three million by this time next year and an authoritative review of high street spending from Ernst & Young, the consultancy, says the raft of pre-Christmas sales and discounting has been “deeper than ever before”, with average prices down 37.1% compared with the full ticket price.

DP launch glass based on supermodel’s breast

A wine glass that pays tribute to the breasts of German supermodel Claudia Schiffer has been designed by Karl Lagerfeld. The modern retake of the wine glass created specifically for Marie Antoinette, is being produced for LVMH brand Dom Pérignon.

Virgin bucks the trend

Not everyone is finding Christmas trade so difficult. Virgin Wines has just recorded its highest-ever weekly sales volume. Its 30,000 case sales is a 100% volume increase on like-for-like business with 2007, and has generated £1.84 million.

Comic Relief teams up with South African winery

Have a drink, have a laugh, and be charitable. Comic Relief has teamed up with SAAM Mountain Vineyards to produce the first-ever Comic Relief wines. Damien Hirst, Jancis Robinson MW and Tim Atkin MW have all been involved, and two wines will be available to buy across the UK from 1 February, with £1 from each bottle sold going to Wine Relief.

Basset becomes president of sommelier competition

Gerard Basset MW has been appointed president of the Champagne Jacquart Rising Stars Trophy 2009. Basset, who owns Hotel TerraVina and was the founder of Hotel du Vin, will head up the judging of the exciting sommelier competition during its Grand Final in April.

Fairtrade wine brand moves into Chile

Fairhills has extended production into Chile, making it the first fairtrade wine to cover all three fairtrade wine-producing countries. Fairhills now has wine production facilities and community support projects in South Africa, Argentina and Chile.
